Try the new lifestyle detox approach to juicing that promises to save time, while it boosts your health and won’t leave you feeling ravenous for food!
When my schedule gets busy my favourite thing to do is a juice and food detox. Not only does it keep me healthy and energized, but I also save time because there are fewer meals to prep!
The key to healthy Lifestyle Juicing is not to skip out on key nutrients. Most juices don’t contain healthy fats and sufficient protein to keep your blood sugar stable, and help you feel full longer. Adding food ensures that you incorporate balanced macronutrients so that you have a healthy, balanced diet. Thats why I love pairing my cold press juices with a raw salad that includes key nutrients such as tempeh protein and healthy fats like avacodo for a complete macronutrient balanced meal! The bio Raw salads at https://www.naturesemporium.com are also quite amazing and come in a variety of vegan protein toppings labeled fun names like ” The Ninja”!
Raw, organic juice is the key component of a lifestyle detox because of the nutrients, phytochemicals, and antioxidants that are in an easily absorbable liquid form. Most juices don’t contain healthy fats and sufficient protein to keep your blood sugar stable, and help you feel full longer. Adding food ensures that you incorporate balanced macronutrients so that you have a healthy, balanced diet.
Breaking Down Toxins
Pairing juices with the right food combinations allow the digestive system to have a much-needed break. Doing this allows for ultimate metabolic performance.
When you consume fast-digesting foods and cold-press juices, you give your digestive system a break. Since so much of our daily energy goes to digesting food, eating easy-to-breakdown foods will give you an instant energy boost. It will also allow the body time to rid itself of undigested toxins that have been fermenting in your system. The body can hold on to up to 20 pounds of undigested toxins!
Lifestyle Detox Prep
So, you’re ready to start your Lifestyle Detox. One or two days prior to beginning your cleanse, phase-out dairy, red meat, sugar, alcohol, coffee and wheat. This will prepare your body, and prevent the detox from shocking your system.
The Lifestyle Detox wants to make things easy for you! It is flexible and allows you to supplement juices for meals and snacks when it’s most convenient for you.
Add a juice where you feel you need it the most. Do you often skip breakfast? Add a juice. Feel low energy at 3:00 p.m.? Juice time. Pre-workout do you feel like your dragging yourself to the gym? You got it – juice time.
Juicing and Food Pairings
It’s time to get simple with your food. Focus on foods that move through the body easily, or what I call “Metabolic Performance” foods. These will allow you to absorb nutrients to their fullest potential.
Metabolic Performance Foods Include:
- Fresh vegetables (as a raw salad, whole, or steamed – with added sea salt if desired)
- Healthy fats such as avocados
- Baked (and raw) root vegetables like parsnip, butternut squash, and sweet potato (Try these wholesome comfort veggies for dinner with your raw salad, with a little organic butter, sea salt and agave)
- Low-sodium vegetable soups
You’ll also want to include small amounts of easy-to-digest proteins. These include:
- Beans
- Hummus
- Legumes (Lupin, Lentil, Green Peas, Soy, Red, Black, Yellow, Fava, Chickpeas)
- Raw goat’s milk cheeses (use sparingly with raw and cooked vegetables)
- Almond, hemp and rice milks
- Almonds
- Tofu and tempeh
- Mung bean noodles
- Sunflower, sesame, hemp and poppy seeds
- Fresh fish (ideally wild and organic)
Sample Lifestyle Detox Plan
Not sure where to start? Here is a sample Lifestyle Detox from Nature’s Emporium. The goal of this plan is to consume five juices throughout the day, along with healthy food. Aim to eat or drink something every two or three hours.
Upon waking: Thymeless Collagen Juice (Best consumed on an empty stomach.)
Breakfast: One cup of organic berries and a Green Fusion juice
Post-morning workout: Mint condition antioxidant juice to replenish and speed recovery
Lunch: Low-sodium vegetable soup
Late-afternoon slump: Need a boost and to prevent coffee cravings? Activated Charcoal lemonade HITT will ease your java desires.
Dinner: Spiralized zucchini with hummus and avocado
Before bed: Black Beauty Juice
And remember to hydrate with at least eight glasses of water a day and herbal teas.
Things to Avoid
The idea is to avoid most potential allergenic foods, including meat proteins, and also to eliminate exposure to toxins so that your body has a chance to heal itself. Avoid packaged and processed foods, wheat, dairy, red meat, alcohol, caffeine, artificial sweeteners and anything that doesn’t come in a fresh and natural form.
What to Expect on your Detox
As you transition to eating less heavy and processed foods, your body will react. At first, you may feel some temporary symptoms of sluggishness or fatigue, as the toxins leave your system and your body adjusts. You may have a headache if you are cutting out caffeine and/or a big sugar habit. Some people report a “buzz” from added nutrients; each individual is different in their response.
Typically after these temporary symptoms pass, you can expect to feel greater clarity, boosts in energy, elevated mood, fewer cravings for salt and sugar, and many more health benefits. Get ready! What are you waiting for?
Life After Detox
Aim to continue consuming fast-exit foods. Gradually ease back into your regular diet, while continuing with smoothies, low-sodium soups, fruits and veggies. Gradually introduce animal protein and caffeine if you like. Think lifestyle. It’s not about quick fixes; it’s about gradual, lasting change.
